작가노트

동아시아에서 《주역》은 우주의 변화와 생명의 원리를 말하는 경전이다. 나는 그 내용들에서 예술적 영감을 얻어 우주변화와 생명의 의미를 상징적으로 나타낼 수 있었다.

나의 작품들은 ‘생명’이란 큰 틀에서 구상되었다. 그 생명은 《주역》의 ‘낳고 낳는’ 것과 연결된다. 작품의 생명성은 창조· 부활· 평화· 영원· 감응· 믿음의 상징적 의미를 갖는다: 창조는 우주와 하늘의 변화는 크고 활기찬 생명을 창조한다는 것을 의미한다. 부활은 씨앗이 부활하여 생명을 이어가듯 다시 돌아와 땅위에서 새롭게 시작한다는 것을 의미한다. 평화는 땅의 기운이 하늘로 올라가고 하늘의 기운이 땅으로 내려와 서로 통한다는 것을 의미한다. 영원은 변함없이 계속됨을 의미한다. 감응은 남녀가 서로 만나 순수한 사랑을 느끼고 결합한다는 것을 의미한다. 믿음은 어미 새가 알을 품은 형태로, 한 몸으로 결합되어 서로 신뢰한다는 것을 의미한다.

작품의 상징적 형태는 하늘과 땅, 새와 물고기, 해와 산 등의 모습으로 나타났다. 이것들은 자연 속에서 낳고 낳는 생명을 뜻하기 때문이다. 나는 자연에서 나온 돌과 나무로 새기고 색을 넣는 과정을 통해 생명의 의미를 작품으로 표현하였다.

Artist’s Statement

In East Asia, the Joo-Yeok(周易) is a scripture that tells us the universe's change and the principle of life. I was able to symbolically express the meaning of them with artistic inspiration in the contents.

My works were conceived in a big frame of ‘life’. Life is linked to the ‘birth and the birth’ of the Joo-Yeok(周易). The life in the work has the symbolic meaning of creativity, resurrection, peace, uniting, and belief: Creativity means that change in the space and the sky means the creation of a big, energetic life. Resurrection means that as seeds are resurrected and life continues, there is a returning, a new beginning out of the earth. Peace has meaning that the energy of the earth rises toward the sky, the energy of the sky descends toward the earth, and this is the communication between them. Eternity has meaning of changeless continual existence. Uniting means that a man and a woman meet, feel a pure love for each other, and become one. Lastly, belief means that like a mother bird warming its egg, forming one body and having mutual faith.

The symbolic form of the work appeared as the form of sky and earth, bird and fish, sea and mountain. This is because they mean life that is born and lived in nature. Through the process of engraving and coloring on stone and wood from nature, I expressed the meaning of life.
