작가노트

나의 이번 전시는 ‘돌’을 주제로 한 것이다. 나는 전각 작가이다. 전각은 돌을 주 재료로 한 것이고, 그 돌에 문자나 그림을 새겨서 찍는 것이다. 때문에 20년 가까이 나의 작품 대부분은 새겨서 찍었다. 그렇지만 전각은 새긴 돌 자체도 작품이다.

나는 돌을 손으로 새기면서 돌과 하나가 될 때 큰 기쁨을 얻는다. 예를 들면 돌에 스케치할 때, 칼로 새길 때, 돌이 파이거나 깨질 때, 페인트를 칠하고 찍을 때, 돌에 물감을 칠할 때 나의 정신은 돌과 하나가 되어 느낌을 나눈다. 이 때는 어떠한 것도 개입되지 않는 세계로 옮겨간다. 크지 않은 돌의 공간이 바로 그곳이다.

내가 작품에 돌을 넣은 것은 나와 돌이 하나가 되어 자연의 모습과 인간의 문자가 자유롭게 혼합되어 새겨졌기 때문이다. 예술로 새롭게 탄생한 돌의 모습들은 다양하다. 그것들의 형태는 작지만 나의 응집된 정신세계가 예술로 확장된 것이다.

Artist’s Statement

My new exhibition is based on the theme of stone. I am a seal engraver. Stone is a major source of seal engraving, and seal engraving is to engrave letters or sketches on stones and use these stones to stamp or imprint these lettersor images on paper. For this reason, for some twenty years, most of my works have been engraved and then imprinted. However, in these pieces, the engraved stone itself is the work of art.

I derive great joy from using my hands to engrave stone and becoming one with the stone. When I sketch on the stone or engrave it, when the stone chips or cracks, when I color the engraved stone and imprint its image, my spirit becomes one with the stone and we share our feelings together. During this time, I am transferred to another world where nothing else can enter. This world is in the space of a small stone.

I have made stone the theme of this exhibition because, as the stone and I become one, the form of nature and the character of humanity are freely fused together and engraved. These stones, newly born as works of art, have various forms. Though the forms are small, they are my condensed spiritual world expanded into art.
